ANA

Role: / HP: 200 / Difficulty:

OVERVIEW

Ana is an exceedingly powerful ranged healer. Her Biotic Rifle and Biotic Grenade allow her to burst heal and provide support to her teammates from an extended range, without the need to be in the front lines. Her dominant burst healing is offset by her low mobility and lack of offensive damage output, marking her a prime target for enemy flankers.

However, that does not mean her abilities do not have potential offensive utility. Ana’s Biotic Rifle discharges a mix of hitscan and projectile shots, which either heals or damages, depending on whether an ally or foe has been targeted. Her Biotic Grenade provides healing buff in an area of effect provided to her teammates, and any enemies caught within the radius gain a debuff which negates any healing received for 4 seconds. Her Sleep Dart is one of the strongest crowd control effects – an ability that, if successfully landed, tranquilizes a single enemy hero for 5.5 seconds. Keep in mind, any damage done to the slept target will remove this effect allowing the enemy hero to regain consciousness.

The potential utilization of Ana’s abilities is balanced with long cooldown times and higher than usual mechanical ceiling as her kit requires multiple types of skill shots. Exceptional Ana players with great judgement calls on timing her two-way abilities, can be the x-factor determining a successful or failed teamfight.

ABILITIES

Damage: 70

Healing: 75

Reload: 1.5s

Ana uses her Biotic Rifle to shoot darts that will heal an ally or deal damage to an enemy. The dart will heal or deal damage over a brief period of just under a second. Since the rifle discharges darts, there is no bonus to healing or damage for headshots. The low burst damage and inability to deliver devastating headshots does not provide a reward for her precise long distance marksmanship, making her a poor substitute for a dependable sustained offensive sniper. Her healing effect provides 25% more healing than the damage it can provide making her rifle more effective used for a supportive role.

An ability that can be toggled on and off. When Ana scopes into her Biotic Rifle, her darts become gain hitscan properties and are no longer projectiles, increasing the speed she can effectively heal since the dart no longer has to travel the distance before hitting her target. Otherwise, it is the same as Ana’s LMB. Ana’s movement speed is also reduced while scoped in.

Damage: 60

Healing: +50% for 4s

Cooldown: 10s

The Biotic Grenade is one of the most powerful utility abilities in the game. In a support role, the grenade heals all allies 100 HP within 4 meters and increases any additional healing to those affected targets by 50%. Any enemy caught within the grenade’s area of effect will suffer 60 damage and cannot heal for the next 4 seconds. The offensive utility of this grenade can negate an enemy’s Zenyatta Transcendence ultimate for 4 seconds allowing your team to finish targets that cannot heal.

Damage: 5

Duration: 5.5s (0.5s to wake when damaged)

Cooldown: 12s

Ana draws her sidearm and launches a sleep dart at an enemy. The 0.5 second casting animation, the linear projectile properties of the sleep dart, and 12 second cooldown requires Ana to choose her targets wisely. Once the ability has been activated, it cannot be cancelled.

Damage: +50%

Damage Reduction: +50%

Duration: 8s

Cooldown: 12s

Ana provides an ally with an increased damage output and damage reduction buff for 8 seconds. Ana cannot cast the ability on herself and must target an ally. Nano Boost does not provide immunity from crowd control effects such as stun, sleep, or knock back.

PLAY STYLES, & COMPOSITION

Ana is a support healer mainly selected as the main healing output for her team. Her low damage and inability to deliver headshots does not provide a reward for her precise long distance offensive marksmanship, unless the targeted enemy has 60 HP or lower. Placing more value on her defensive capabilities and providing her team with healing should be Ana’s main focus.

Ana’s abilities carry a vast amount of utility providing allied teammates with increased defensive survivability, while threatening enemy team’s ability to healing denying pressure. In addition to her kit’s utility, her Sleep Dart is one of the most valuable crowd controlling shutdown abilities in Overwatch. With a well timed Sleep Dart, she is able to disable Genji’s Dragonblade, Roadhog’s Wholehog, and Primal Raging Winstons. This leaves the enemy target completely immobilized for 5.5 seconds as they take a short nap until the full duration of the Dart has run its course, or receive any damage which wakes the target during its nap.

Ana is most effective when she can maintain a safe and static distance between her and the enemy team. If she can maintain a position outside the enemy’s line of sight, she can focus on healing her teammates without the worry of taking on damage from long ranged Heroes. Maintaining a static also positions her teammates to understand the limitations of their aggression if they are consciously making an effort to keep within her line of sight. Having a strong position with a degree of verticality can pressure the enemy Heroes in using their abilities in order to reach Ana’s location. This will provide Ana’s team a cooldown advantage during their team fight.

An overly aggressive ally may force Ana to lose line of sight of teammates, which will no longer receive healing, potentially leading to the death of an overextended teammate. If a teammate forces Ana to leave her advantageous position in order to gain line of sight to provide vital healing, this can reposition Ana in a vulnerable location giving access to enemy Heroes an opportunity to fatally damage or eliminate Ana. Her Biotic Grenade and Sleep Dart abilities provide her a short term addition of survivability. Keeping in mind that any offensive pressure these abilities may originally provided to teammates are no longer available for 10 seconds (Biotic Grenade), and 12 seconds (Sleep Dart).

Her priority focus on healing is situationally dependent, but for most scenarios, maintaining healing on her allied teammates which provides defensive or mitigative support can further extend her team’s threat in drawn out fights.

Ana excels in a structured static tank composition. However, Ana is still viable in dive compositions with proper defensive setups with strong anchoring positions. This forces enemies who want to attempt to contest their location through a combination of mitigative and high healing output cooldowns. Her healing is commonly paired with Lucio since he is able to provide an area of effect healing with Amp it Up!. Lucio’s healing in conjunction with Biotic Grenade offers her and her allies 210.6HP over the course of 3 seconds. Lucio’s Soundwave (BOOP!) also offers defensive mitigation when he blast away enemy Heroes that threaten the pair’s location.

Quick Composition Terminology:
321 Tank = 3 Tanks, 2 Supports, 1 Damage Dealer
222 Standard = 2 Tanks, 2 Support, 2 Damage Dealers

In a 321 Tank composition, Ana excels remarkably well due to her Biotic Grenade which can heal bulk amounts of health points of her tanks. Engaging in a close quarters combat fight can catch an enemy team off guard if their response is not quick and decisive. In this composition, Ana’s support duo will typically be Lucio whenever attacking. He can accelerate a tight Deathball tanking front line, crashing into the enemy team and forcing a team fight. Her tank frontline aggressively fight up close beside enemy Heroes, allows the splash radius of her Biotic Grenade to hit enemies. This will damage them for 60 HP while also applying a debuff denying any attempted healing from the opposition’s support healers. The Biotic Grenade also allows Ana to heal her allies with an initial amount of 100 HP on contact while amplifying her Biotic Rifle healing shots from 75HP, up to 112.5HP. Any Teammates who apply healing effects allies affected by her Biotic Grenade buff will also take advantage of the increased healing of +50% bonus.

Ana also synergizes extraordinarily well with Soldier 76. The duo is capable of holding a static defensive position for an extended period of time without support. This is due to the combination of Ana’s Biotic Grenade with Soldier 76’s Bionic Field, providing the duo with 406 HP effective healing over 5 seconds. With such vigorous healing, the duo can outsustain any enemy hero lacking a large instant amount of burst damage (watch out for that Tracer Pulse Bomb!). To dislodge the duo, it would normally require at least 2 or more heroes with a few major cooldowns being used in sequential order to overwhelm the duo’s location. The commonly used term, “Nano Visor”, is the combination of Ana applying her Nano Boost ultimate onto Soldier as he activates his Tactical Visor to give an increase of 50% damage output and 50% damage reduction for 8 seconds, allowing Soldier to play more aggressively.

If Zenyatta is selected alongside Ana and 76, static locations commonly used during defensive phases will have to be dealt with early on in the fight by the enemy team. The increase in damage dealt by Zenyatta’s Discord Orb creates a epicenter of high damage output potential that can quickly eliminate enemies standing in the line of sight of the trio’s focus.

Ana and Mercy is discouraged as a healing duo. While both healers do provide strong defensive ultimates for the team, Zenyatta’s Transcendence and Lucio’s Sound Barrier provide a more reliable defensive ultimate in application. Zenyatta’s 300HP/sec healing with Transcendence or Lucio’s 500 HP increase on top of teammates health pools with Sound Barrier provide a better chance of outlasting high sustained damage and instant bursting damage ultimates.

ANA QUICK TIPS

Using scoped in Biotic Rifle will allow Ana to deliver healing faster to her teammates at the cost of losing a portion of her field of vision resulting in enemies being able to sneak up on her. Being able to use sound cues like footsteps will prove valuable if enemies sneak close to her.

Nano Boost cannot prevent death, but using the ability on an ally that is near death can help prevent an ally from being eliminated, as it reduces oncoming enemy damage.

Sleep Dart is very valuable to Ana. It can allow her to escape an attacking flanker, so unless the player is confident she will hit her target it is best to save the Sleep Dart for critical situations.

Ana being played during Dive compositions may have a harder time keeping her allies healed as her healing abilities are skill shots.

Teams with Ana win more fights when being able to apply pressure with her Biotic Grenade and Sleep Dart as an offensive pressure tool than be forced to use them defensively.

Understanding Heroes and how their healing cooldowns benefit from Ana’s Biotic Grenade can be very strong. For example, Soldier 76’s Biotic Field coupled with Ana’s Biotic Grenade outputs a high degree of health in a short period of time.

PROS & CONS

Pros

  • 1. Ana’s abilities have dual utilization which allows them to be both offensive and defensive at the same time
  • 2. Has the ability to provide support from an extended range of distance and angles
  • 3. Sleep Darts can put any unshielded enemy to sleep, neutralizing and interrupting them
  • 4. Biotic Grenade is the only ability in Overwatch which can prevent the enemy from gaining any healing

Cons

  • 1. Ana’s kit requires a higher level of mechanical skill in order to compete at the highest levels of gameplay
  • 2. Long cooldowns on abilities require Ana players to have well disciplined decision making
  • 3. Her kit’s lack of mobility pressures teammates to provide ample protection or she becomes quite vulnerable
  • 4. Biotic Rifle’s damage output is far less effective in comparison to other healing support Heroes
