BASTION

Role: / HP: 100 / Difficulty:

OVERVIEW

Bastion is a very situational hero which limits the amount of play styles it is able to achieve. Bastion in Configuration: Sentry can sustain the highest damage output out of all heroes in Overwatch, but that ability comes at the cost of the removal of all mobility, making him an easy target to pick off. Even in its mobile Configuration: Recon, Bastion lacks any abilities that will allow it to escape or evade immediate danger. This means that Bastion players need to have extremely good positional knowledge to know where they can maintain sustained damage and pressure, but also have the option to flee to the safety of nearby teammates that can prevent their death. To fully utilize Bastion, players must understand Bastion is only beneficial in certain areas of some maps and may be extremely difficult to utilize in other maps. If Bastion is to achieve maximum damage output, it will require a range of teammates that can support and protect it.

ABILITIES

Bastion enjoys a 20% damage reduction passive while in Configuration: Sentry and Configuration: Tank.

Recon Mode 8 bullets/s, 25 bullets, 6-20 damage/bullet

Reload: 2s

In Recon mode, Bastion is mobile and is equipped with a submachine gun that can fire a continuous stream of bullets. Accuracy penalty begins after the first three continuous shots fired and recedes as soon as the primary fire button is released. In comparison to Soldier’s 76 accuracy penalty, Bastion’s penalty builds much slower and is much more limited, but so is the rate of fire of its weapon. This makes the raw damage output slightly less than Soldier 76, but potentially more accurate with sustained fire.

Sentry Mode: 35 bullets/s, 300 bullets, 4-15 damage/bullet

Reload: 2s

In Sentry mode, Bastion transforms into an immobile gatling gun. The 300 round drum allows Bastion to apply consistent pressure for a long duration of time without the need to reload. Bastion’s bullet spread occurs immediately unlike Configuration: Sentry’s gradual increase over time. As a result the damage output is increased in this mode, but the accuracy is decreased.

Healing 75/s

Cooldown: 1s

Duration: Up to 4s

This ability allows Bastion to heal itself at 75 health per second. While in Configuration: Recon and Configuration: Tank, Bastion is able to repair itself as it moves around without any movement speed penalties. Bastion is also able to use this ability while in Configuration: Sentry. However, whichever mode it is in, Bastion is unable to use its primary weapon simultaneously with this ability.

Casting Time (Sentry) 1s

Casting Time (Recon): 0.5s

Bastion transforms between Configuration: Sentry and Configuration: Recon. During the transformation animation, Bastion is immobile. If Bastion does not reload its primary weapon before using Reconfigure and maintains the alternate configuration for more than 2 seconds when it alternates back to the previous configuration it will have full ammo again.

Damage 205 (direct hit)

Self Damage: Up to 35

Duration: 8s

Rate: 1.11s

Speed: 44m/s

Bastion transforms into a tank. Bastion now changes his primary fire to a projectile which deals an area of effect damage upon impact. A direct hit will deal 205 damage and the damage diminishes as it is further away from the point of impact within the 2 meter radius. Bastion is able to do lethal damage to itself if it is caught within the blast radius.

PLAY STYLES, & COMPOSITION

Bastion is a hitscan hero, but its main source of sustained damage requires it to be in Configuration: Sentry which limits the amount of play styles available to Bastion. One could argue Configuration: Recon allows Bastion mobility and Self-Repair and allows it to sustain in long term fights, but if players are looking for a run and gun play style then Soldier 76 will be the more optimal choice. He far exceeds Bastion in Configuration: Recon mode in mobility, and he has a much smaller hitbox.

Given this, Bastion should be considered most effective while stationary, becoming mobile only when its position has been compromised in order to Self-Repair without sustaining any more damage or repositioning for Configuration: Sentry. Positioning is extremely important for Bastion and should always utilize high ground advantage in order to increase the difficulty of reaching Bastion.

Bastion is extremely effective in defending linear positions. For example, Bastion excels at defending a hallway where enemies cannot sneak behind it or attack it from a long range without putting themselves within Bastion’s fury.

Configuration: Sentry also allows Bastion to excel in certain areas of payload objective maps. Bastion is able to remain in Configuration: Sentry on top of the payload as it moves. A teammate with a barrier or shield can remain static in front of Bastion as it is able to punish the enemy before they reach the objective. Be forewarned, certain areas of payload maps offer many attack angles on the payload which can overwhelm Bastion.

In order to utilize Bastion’s Configuration: Sentry, it must remain stationary which makes allies with shields and barriers extremely valuable to Bastion. In fact, Bastion ought to have at least one ally with a shield or barrier dedicated to protecting him all game or else its potential usefulness is drastically decreased.

The most effective duo partner for Bastion is Orisa. Orisa is able to refresh her 900 health Protective Barrier every 8 seconds, but the reason Orisa is the most effective partner for Bastion is because Orisa can place a Protective Barrier for Bastion and doesn’t need to stay with Bastion to ensure protection. This will allow Bastion to have full range of view without a tank in front of it, and it will also address additional threats attacking from other angles.

Reinhardt is the second most optimal duo for Bastion. In a linear setting, Reinhardt’s Barrier Field is larger than Orisa’s Protective Barrier which may cover more angles of attack from the front. Reinhardt’s Rocket Hammer is also an extremely lethal melee attack which can punish enemies that get too close to the duo. However, the downside of a Reinhardt and Bastion duo is that it requires Reinhardt to stand in front of Bastion which may limit his view, and if Reinhardt is to do any sort of damage it will require him to lower his shield and leave Bastion vulnerable.

BASTION QUICK TIPS

Bastion requires the team to build their composition around him. Without any protection, Bastion is an easy target.

Utilize high ground and vantage points. Do not transform into Configuration: Recon to chase kills because you will force your teammates to follow you.

If the current position is about to be compromised, reposition Configuration: Sentry to a position that can take advantage of the enemy attacking the compromised location.

PROS & CONS

Pros

  • 1. Configuration: Sentry can output the highest sustained damage in the game
  • 2. Configuration: Tank literally turns Bastion into a tank with an extremely dangerous area of effect attack
  • 3. Bastion has a self-repair ability which allows it to return to the fight without the assistance of a healer
  • 4. Has 100 armor in addition to a 200 health pool

Cons

  • 1. Bastion is a very situational hero, understanding when and where it can be utilized is important
  • 2. While in Configuration: Sentry Bastion is immobile and has a weak spot behind it making it an easy target for mobile enemies
  • 3. Bastion is a high priority target that gets focused by enemy teams so teammates are required to shield and protect it while it is in Configuration: Sentry
  • 4. Bastion cannot deal headshots while in Configuration: Sentry
