MEI

Role: / HP: 250 / Difficulty:

OVERVIEW

Mei is one of the best heroes in a solo duel environment. Her Cryo-Freeze allows Mei to encase herself in a protective barrier of ice while regenerating health. Her Ice Wall ability allows Mei to create a solid wall of ice which can block almost all abilities and separating the enemy on smaller map terrains. And did I mention Mei can freeze the enemy? Freezing the enemy will allow Mei ample time to take aim, smirk, and launch icicle towards their face.

While Mei has high self sustainability, improperly timed usage of Cryo-Freeze will allow the enemy an opportunity to surround her and overwhelm her when the ability is over. Her Endothermic Blaster, while able to freeze the enemy, is weak and has a short range. Icicle is also the only projectile in Overwatch to suffer a Damage Fall off Penalty. Even though Ice Wall is a barrier, it does not stop the enemy from climbing over or destroying it. Playing Mei on maps with tight corridors and small rooms keeps enemies within her short range. Least desirable map conditions are wide open spaces and long ranged distances.

ABILITIES

Damage 2.25/round 45/s

Speed: 20m/s

Duration: 2s

Freeze Rate: 20 rounds/s

Reload: 1.5s

Mei uses her blaster to damage, slow and freeze enemies. Her blaster dispenses 20 rounds per second and Mei must land 30 rounds on her target in order to freeze them for 2 seconds. The number of hits required to freeze does not change with any damage increasing abilities nor do headshots count. Once a target has been hit by her spray, the enemy suffers from slow which increases till the target is frozen. Once frozen, all abilities the enemy had active will be interrupted, for example Reinhardt can be frozen in the middle of his Charge ability. Since it is a channeling weapon, D.Va’s Defense Matrix will not be able to block the ability. However, Mei’s Endothermic Blaster cannot penetrate through shields or barriers. Endothermic Blaster’s ammo pool is shared between primary fire and Icicle.

Damage 22-75

Speed: 88.88m/s

Rate: 0.4s casting

Reload: 1.5s

Mei’s Endothermic Blaster produces an icicle and then it is launched at the enemy. This weapon is perfect for Mei to headshot an enemy with after they are frozen, or to poke at the enemy from a distance. Even though the Icicle ability shoots projectiles, this weapon suffers Damage Fall off Penalty, the only projectile to do so in the game. Each Icicle consumes 25 from the ammo pool. The ammo pool is shared between Endothermic Blaster and Icicle.

Health 500/pillar (5 pillars)

Duration: 4.5s

Cooldown: 10s

The name speaks for itself: Mei creates an Ice Wall. This Ice Wall will maintain the properties of a wall in the game. Projectiles and hitscan abilities alike will not be able to penetrate the wall but Hanzo’s Dragonstrike can still pass through. Genji and Hanzo can both climb over the wall if they choose to do so. However, it can be destroyed. The Ice Wall itself consists of 5 pillars which cover a 3×8 meter area over 4.5 seconds. Each pillar in Ice Wall has 500 HP and can be individually destroyed. Mei can also cancel the ability early.

Healing 37.5/s (Up to 150)

Duration: Up to 4s

Cooldown: 12s

Mei encases herself in a block of ice. While protected in this block of ice, Mei is invulnerable to damage and effects, and heals herself over time. This ability heals 37.5 health/second for a total of 150 health over 4 seconds. Just like Ice Wall, Mei is able to cancel the ability early. While Mei is in Cryo-Freeze and is on the objective she still contests the point, allowing Mei to be very strong for delay tactics.

Damage ~20/s

Area of Effect: 20m

Duration: 5s

Freeze After: 2.5s for remainder of ultimate

Rate: 1.5s casting time (once drone hits floor)

Mei deploys her drone. Once her drone lands on the floor, it will begin to slow and freeze all enemies within a 10 meter radius. D.Va is able to destroy Mei’s Blizzard drone before it lands, but the drone is able to penetrate barriers and shields. If Mei uses her Endothermic Blaster on an enemy caught in Blizzard they will freeze faster.

PLAY STYLES, & COMPOSITION

Selecting Mei is map dependant and requires environments which allow her to surprise the enemy with crowd controlling tactics. While Mei is very strong in a solo duel environment, her abilities allow her to control the flow of the team fight. Mei is also very strong against tanks since she can freeze a slow moving target. Being pressured, her Cryo-Freeze provides self-healing and invincibility avoiding all enemy damage and their effects.

Her Endothermic Blaster has limited range, but is capable of freezing targets solid. Because it is a channeling weapon, even D.Va’s Defense Matrix cannot prevent freezing. Once frozen, all personal abilities will be interrupted such as Reinhardt’s barrier and D.Va’s Defense Matrix. In a team fight, Mei having her teammates nearby provide the additional damage for final blows.

Her strength comes from her ability to use her Ice Wall to seal off locations of the map and immediately stop the enemy’s aggression. Utilized properly, timing the separation of the enemy team will allow her teammates to overwhelm the isolated targets. Only Hanzo’s Dragonstrike is able to penetrate it. Mei’s ultimate can be most effectively used while fighting on static capture points provided in gamemodes assault, capture and hybrid. Her Ultimate covers the majority or even entire capture points on certain maps shutting down enemies from contesting.

Mei excels in defensive compositions. Due to her Cryo-Freeze and Ice Wall abilities, Mei can fulfill the role of an off tank. While Mei has more health than most support and offense heroes, her health pool does not allow Mei to be replace a frontline tank. Her role offensively is limited by the damage range output of her Icicle, due to the Damage Fall Off Penalty. However, her abilities and increased health pool allow Mei to provide an up close presence with her tanks.

Mei’s success revolves around specific map layouts, defensive formations or specialized offensive tactics. Offensive use with Mei allows Reinhardt to be an effective teammate since he can prevent damage while getting her close to the enemies. Very common defensive tactics has Mei taking her enemies by surprise. Appearing from hidden locations near choke points and entry ways she can separate enemy teams or completely stop attackers from entering a room. Her ultimate is game breaking due the size of area which it can cover (can cover entire objective points).

In a 321 composition, Mei can be substituted as the third tank. Her increased durability and sustainability allows Mei to cause chaos in the enemy’s front line ranks. She has the durability to run past enemy shields and barriers and try to freeze the enemy tank. With two tanks that can protect Mei upfront, will allow her to play aggressively. However, her first job in any engagement is to utilize her Ice Wall. If she is able to separate one or two enemies from their team, it will result in quick eliminations even if they are tanks. Even in wide open areas, if Mei is able to separate the enemy ranged offensive and support heroes, any enemy behind the wall will no longer receive healing or supplementary support damage.

In a 222 composition, Mei can still be effective as a secondary tank. However, her play style must now reflect around not letting her primary tank be eliminated. Once again, similar to a 321 composition, Mei’s role is to control the fight, deciding on which enemies to trap with her ice wall.

MEI QUICK TIPS

Mei is very powerful for controlling objectives and delay tactics.

Use Mei’s Ice Wall to block not only for yourself, but block the line of sight of your enemy’s ranged heroes.

If Mei has teammates nearby, after freezing an enemy it is better to allow teammates to finish while she goes after the next target.

PROS & CONS

Pros

  • 1. Can dictate the flow of a fight with her abilities by separating the enemy at choke points, inside rooms, and hallways
  • 2. Ice Wall ability can act similar to protective shields blocking, enemy damage and abilities
  • 3. Cryo-Freeze provides Mei self-healing and invulnerable barrier protection
  • 4. Her crowd control ultimate ability has the longest duration, and area of effect in Overwatch

Cons

  • 1. Mei’s is less effective during rounds played on wide open maps, making it much harder for her to isolate enemies to eliminate
  • 2. Her secondary fire, Icicle, is the only projectile to have fall off damage
  • 3. The win condition for compositions including Mei are predictable since the goal is to separate, or isolate the enemy team
  • 4. Maps with a multitude of high ground, allow enemies to distance themselves away from her short range threat
