PHARAH

Role: / HP: 200 / Difficulty:

OVERVIEW

Pharah is an offensive aerial hero who dominates the skies since “justice rains from above.” She is able to control the skies while delivering devastating rocket strikes into her foes. Pharah’s Concussive Blast can herd her targets like sheep in a meadow only to be followed by a buffet of rockets unleashed in her ultimate Barrage.

Although her flight is an advantage, her horizontal movement is slow, providing opportunities where her enemies can contest her. Aerial flight and scaling around tall vertical buildings and terrain objects are very important to her success. She can use her Rocket Launcher and Concussive Blast to knock herself away from a wall or building quickly if she is caught in the open, but she can only use her thrusters to move up or down which limits her dodging capabilities. Maps with a limited skybox will remove Pharah’s advantage, allowing hitscan heroes to combat her with more favorable conditions. Maximizing Pharah’s Barrage ability requires Pharah to position herself where she has line of sight of her enemies and for the duration of Barrage, she is immobile which allows her to be an easy target.

ABILITIES

Pharah’s jump button has an additional flight mechanism while being held down, allowing her to stay hovering so long as her Jump Jet fuel is available.

Damage: 120 direct, 20-80 splash (within 5m)

Rate: 1.1/s

Ammo: 6

Reload: 1s

Pharah launches a projectile rocket towards her enemies. Upon impact, successful rockets directly impacting targets will deliver a large burst of damage. Rockets further provide cleave damage and a slight knockback effect when enemy targets are caught within its blast radius.

Area of Effect: 16m

Speed: 50m/s

Cooldown: 12s

Pharah shoots a Concussive Blast that does not deal damage but has a powerful knockback ability, pushing enemies away from the impact. This ability allows Pharah to quickly blast herself away from a building or wall while in flight. Since this ability does not cause any damage, Pharah will not take self damage like if she was trying to utilizing Rocking Launcher for the same utility. This blast is useful for dispersing enemies lodged in a fortified position and knocking enemies off ledges.

Range: ~20m vertical,

Cooldown: 10s

Pharah quickly gains altitude. If Pharah was on a flat even surface, it will take Pharah one second to fall back onto the same level the ability was used. Using Hover with Jump Jet will all Pharah to gain additional altitude at the expense of fuel. However, using Jump Jet without Hover will allow Pharah to recharge her thrusters. With proper fuel management, Pharah can maintain flight indefinitely using Jump Jet to maintaining flight while refueling.

Damage:
40/rocket

Rate: 30 rockets/s

Speed: 28.5m/s

Duration: 3s

Pharah becomes immobilized and launches 90 rockets over 3 seconds into the direction she is looking at. She can adjust the direction of her rockets by looking at the direction she wants them to go. Just like her other rockets, she can take self-damage from the resulting explosion. This ability is most effective closer to the enemy since the rockets she launches cannot be accurately targeted.

PLAY STYLES, & COMPOSITION

Pharah can fly and should always take advantage of her ability to to terrorize her enemies from above. Map terrains with windows and buildings grant Pharah the advantage to lose line of sight with her enemies and surprise them by attacking from locations they do not expect.

While Pharah can be effective in any range, being in flight in open areas of the sky will leave her to vulnerable ranged threats. Her greatest fears during flight are snipers. These damage dealers will deliver lethal burst damage in a single shot, and a successful headshot will leave Pharah lifelessly falling out of the sky. Utilizing buildings, Pharah can maintain her flight advantage and rain rockets upon enemies from an off-angled aerial position. Intelligent game awareness will allow Pharah players to stay clear from ranged hunters while increasing her chances of catching them by surprise.

Using her array of aerial engagement options, enemy Heroes will tread lightly around the map while placing efforts towards anticipating her aggression. Pharah can provide firing support from a distance, launching explosive rockets to soften up enemy targets. In addition, enemies taking direct impact from Pharah’s Rocket Launcher rockets will suffer massive amounts of damage. A chaotic fast pace close quarters brawl can provide Pharah a short period of time where she can be uncontested. Enemies may steer their focus off of Pharah during this time, allowing her to reach the vertical limits of the map’s skybox.

The commonly used term Pharmercy pairs Pharah and Mercy as a duo combo. Mercy’s Guardian Angel ability allows her to maintain flight with Pharah, and she is the only Hero that can up with her. Mercy’s Caduceus Staff provides Pharah with constant healing or increased damage output. The provided assistance from Mercy will make Pharah a much tougher obstacle for Heroes like Soldier 76 to contest.

Pharah can excel in any composition, provided the map has a large skybox for her aerial height to play an advantage. Maps with a smaller skybox can place limitations to her flight and distance, potentially putting her close to threatening ranged Heroes for easier targeting.

Quick Composition Terminology:
Dive = i.e. Heroes like Winston, Tracer, D.Va, Genji
Static = i.e. Heroes like Reinhardt, Orisa, McCree, Junkrat

Pharah can be effective within a Static composition, which will requires calculated engagements. During the team’s advancement, Pharah can provide ranged pressure with rocket fire. During the initial stages of a team brawl, Pharah can take to the skies, roaring upwards and positioning herself at off angles. Enemies will be forced to either direct their focus looking up at her location or the ongoing ground battle nearby.

In a Dive composition, her teammates can cause a fast paced brawl where the initial encounter can direct attention away from her for a short period of time. This moment of opportunity allows Pharah to quickly scale upwards to the sky, where she is able to rain down rockets at a 90 degree angle, once again forcing enemy ranged heroes to split their focus between two separate areas of the fight. As the fight continues, if the enemy team is unable to quickly eliminate Pharah or her teammates, will suffer the wrath of the direct impact rockets.

PHARAH QUICK TIPS

Utilize her flight ability to attack enemies from angles they do not expect, and force shield and barrier enemies to choose between either blocking her rockets or the attacks of the rest of her team.

Use her rockets’ knock back properties to help boost her horizontal movement, to quickly maneuver around the enemy or dodge projectiles.

If paired with a Mercy, remember to protect her flight path, since she does not have any abilities that allow her to fly by herself and will just fall without any teammates to line of sight her.

PROS & CONS

Pros

  • 1. Her Rocket Launcher attacks maintain consistent damage with zero fall off
  • 2. Aerial flight provides advantageous engagement angles from vertical heights
  • 3. Devastating rocket damage with additional cleave ability to soften up multiple targets
  • 4. Concussion Blast provides a large knockback where potential enemies can be pushed off nearby ledges and can be used as an escape ability in a pinch

Cons

  • 1. While unleashing her Barrage, Pharah is immobile and can be easily targeted
  • 2. Slow horizontal movement speed leaving her very vulnerable in wide open air spaces
  • 3. Enemy targets can be harder to hit as the projectile rockets take time to travel
  • 4. Effective engagements are heavily relied on allies directing focus away from Pharah
