Torbjörn

Role: / HP: 200 / Difficulty:

OVERVIEW

Torbjörn is one of two heroes currently in Overwatch with deployables that have offensive capabilities, with Symmetra being the other. Torbjörn and his turret allow the hero to maintain control of a position, forcing the enemy to contest him before they can advance. Left uncontested, Torbjörn’s turret can maintain pressure within 40 meters consistently without the need of down time to reload as long as it has line of sight of the target. Torbjörn also has the ability to support his teammates by providing armor packs. While Torbjörn may seem like a hero who can only be utilized for a defensive purpose, Torbjörn can still excel at offense provided he has the proper team strategy. These strategies require a well organized plan, having Torbjörn and his team identifying specific locations within a map where Torbjörn’s Build Turret ability can be safely deployed.

Even though Torbjörn can provide additional armor to himself, the additional armor does not allow him to endure long term sustained damage like a tank. His Rivet Gun, while powerful, it is only effective from short to medium range, forcing his turret to provide any sort of long range damage. And while the turret can apply pressure from a long distance, it can only target one hero at a time and is immobile, and thus can be destroyed quickly by enemy projectiles.

ABILITIES

Torbjörn collects scrap off of fallen allies and enemies. He continuously generates 2 scrap every second and can hold at a maximum of 200 scrap at once. Each fallen hero provides Torbjörn an additional 15 scrap that he must be near to collect. Scrap is consumed while producing Armor Packs and that is all it is used for. The amount of scrap Torbjörn has does not affect his health or damage.

Damage 70

Speed: 57m/s

Rate: 0.6 rounds/s

Ammo: 18

Reload: 2s

Torbjörn fires rivets at a long range. The bullets his Rivet Gun discharges are arcing projectiles. His Rivet Gun shares the same ammo pool between his primary fire and secondary fire. When changing weapons to his melee weapon, Torbjörn equips himself with his multi-purpose hammer.

Damage 6-15/pellet

Damage Fall-Off: 7-20m

Speed: 80m/s

Rate: 0.8s/round

Ammo: 18

Ammo Usage: 3/shot

Reload: 2s

The secondary fire of his Rivet Gun ejects molten metal from his gun in a close range burst, similar to a shotgun. Like most shotguns, the secondary fire of Torbjörn’s Rivet Gun is most effective in a close range since the damage is based on per pellet. Every shot from secondary fire consumes 3 ammo from the ammo pool that it shares with the primary fire.

Armor 75 (10 packs max)

Speed: 12m/s

Consumption: 50 scrap

Torbjörn throws an armor pack onto the floor that anyone on his team can pick up. Each Armor Pack consumes 50 scrap and provides 75 armor. Armor Packs synergize well with heroes that naturally have shields such as Symmetra and Zenyatta, as armor is layered beneath shields when taking damage. Symmetra and Zenyatta must lose their shield before the armor starts to get chipped at which allows the Armor Packs to go a longer way. Torbjörn is able to have 10 Armor Packs on the floor before the next one produced forces the oldest on to disappears.

Damage 14/round

Range: 40m

Rate: 2 to 4 rounds/s (level 1 or 2)

Cooldown: 8s

Torbjörn deploys his level 1 turret. Once placed, the turret will deploy over two seconds. Torbjörn does not need to be near his turret when it is deploying. The turret can only be placed on a location where all 4 legs are firmly placed on solid ground, thus preventing the turret from being deployed on top of a pole even if Torbjörn were to get up there somehow. Torbjörn is able to upgrade his level 1 turret to level 2 by swinging his Forge Hammer and hitting his turret 5 times. However, the turret must be at full health in order for the upgrade to happen. The turret is only able to reach level 3 during the duration of Torbjörn’s Molten Core and must be already upgraded to level 2. Upgrading a level 1 turret to level 2 during Molten Core will automatically bring the turret to level 3 for the remainder of Molten Core’s duration. If Torbjörn dies during Molten Core, so does the remainder of the duration of Molten Core, so the turret will revert back to level 2. Torbjörn and his turret’s life do not affect each other’s health pool; when Torbjörn dies, his turret does not disappear with him. At level 3, Torbjörn’s turret fires additional salvos of rockets which are projectiles. It also gains an additional 500 health and increased rate of fire.

Fire Rate +50%

Health: +300 armor

Turret: Upgraded to level 3 (only if previously at Level 2)

Duration: 12s

Torbjörn goes into a rage, increasing his attack speed and durability. Once activated Torbjörn gains an additional 300 armor immediately. Along with his buffs, Torbjörn’s level 2 turret will be upgraded to level 3 for the duration, which increases the turret’s fire rate to 5 rounds per second and includes 4 rockets per second of damage, and the turret has 800 health. Each rocket does 14 damage at a 40m range. If Torbjörn can stack his Armor Packs with Molten Core raising his total armor to 375. The armor from Molten Core is replenishable with Armor Packs.

PLAY STYLES, & COMPOSITION

Contrary to popular belief, Torbjörn does not have to revolve his playstyle around repairing his turret. On an elevated level of play, Torbjörn is more effective attacking the enemies focused on his turret than spending his focus on repairing it.

On a very basic level, Torbjörn’s Rivet Gun allows him to do 116.9 damage per second with his primary fire and 187.5 damage per second with his secondary fire, both with the potential of additional headshot damage. Torbjörn’s turret at level 2 only does 56 damage per second without the ability for headshots and can be repaired at a rate of 62.5 health per second.

Torbjörn should only focus on repairing the turret if the enemy target is outside of his Rivet Gun’s effective range, and that is only if Torbjörn can lose line of sight of the enemy while repairing. If the enemy can deal explosive damage such as Pharah or Junkrat, Torbjörn can still take damage from the explosions and it is advised to just abandon the turret and prepare to build a new turret at another location out of the enemy’s line of sight. This way, instead of both Torbjörn and his turret being killed and destroyed at the same time, the enemy will need to contest another location of his turret, a position where the enemy may put themselves closer for Torbjörn to use his Rivet Gun.

Torbjörn’s armor packs are extremely valuable for a team. An additional +75 effective health for non-tank heroes provides them roughly an additional 30% survivability. The armor packs should be go to the team in priority order. Healers are at the top of the priority list, even before Torbjörn himself. The longer the healers survive, the longer they can heal, the longer the entire team can sustain. Torbjörn himself should be second since his survivability can provide the team more armor packs. Beyond this point, it becomes very situational. While most players feel the offensive heroes should take priority over tanks, if the team only has one tank the team revolves around his survival. Since the tank may take over 75 damage from pre-engagement damage before both team fully commits, providing the solo tank additional durability during the fight may be the difference between winning and losing the fight.

Torbjörn can excel in any static defensive composition. Teammates with shields and barriers can protect Torbjörn’s turret from incoming damage, increasing the damage the turret can output over a long period of time. His turret is also effective placed somewhere at an off angle from his tanks so the enemy must divide their team to engage Torbjörn’s team or the turret.

Quick Composition Terminology:
321 Tank = 3 Tanks, 2 Supports, 1 Damage Dealer
222 Standard = 2 Tanks, 2 Support, 2 Damage Dealers

In a 222 Standard double builder composition, with Torbjörn paired with Symmetra, the duo is able to provide the entire team additional durability. What complements the duo so well is that Symmetra Sentry Turrets are able to slow enemies that come within their range. If the pair can deploy their turrets in a position that can support each other, it can trap and eliminate any unsuspecting flanking enemy very quickly.

In an offensive composition, Torbjörn can be successful on payload or control maps. Torbjörn is able to place his turret on the payload providing additional pressure should the enemy team try to contest the payload. However, on a control map Torbjörn can only achieve his maximum potential if his team can win in the initial engagement, which allows Torbjörn the opportunity to set up his turret. While Torbjörn can set up his turret during the initial engagement, the time Torbjörn spends to upgrade his turret to level 2 is not worth losing the amount of damage output Torbjörn has the potential to produce. If his team loses the initial engagement, his turret becomes irrelevant since Torbjörn cannot set up his turret in an effective location that the enemy cannot target from the control point.

TORBJORN QUICK TIPS

Turret placements are very important. If the turret is placed in a safe location where the enemy cannot target it easily, it will allow Torbjörn more time to be attacking than looking for a new spot to place his turret. Torbjörn does not need to stay next to his turret in order to be effective.

Prioritize giving your teammates Armor Packs. Since they cost 50 scrap and each death provides only 15 scrap, even a full wipe from both teams can only produce two Armor Packs. Healers should always have priority to Armor Packs. Try to give the Armor Packs to your teammates, since placing them randomly may put your supports in your enemy’s line of sight.

Do not put yourself in danger to collect scrap. You may end up losing more armor than the scrap you picked up can replenish.

PROS & CONS

Pros

  • 1. Torbjörn using his Forge Hammer attack can upgrade his turret from level 1 to 2, and it can be upgraded to level 3 by activating his Molten Core ultimate ability after it is fully charged
  • 2. His Rivet Gun is extremely powerful in a short to medium range and can equip his Forge Hammer which deals more damage than his melee attack
  • 3. Can provide himself and his team armor packs increasing their effective health
  • 4. Molten Core increases Torbjörn’s durability and increases his attack speed allowing him to quickly eliminate any enemy that gets too close to him

Cons

  • 1. His turret at level 1 has a low fire rate and low health, and is required to be at full health before it can be upgraded to level 2
  • 2. Relies on his turret for long range damage but it is immobile which makes it vulnerable to projectiles
  • 3. Turret must be level 2 in order for the turret to be upgraded to level 3 during Molten Core
  • 4. Requires scrap to produce armor packs which fall from dead enemies and allies alike
