WIDOWMAKER

Role: / HP: 200 / Difficulty:

OVERVIEW

When utilized properly, Widowmaker and her sniper rifle can rapidly turn the tide of battle to her team’s favor. Her potential to headshot and to increase the base damage from the sniper rifle tenfold greatly rewards precise marksmanship. Widowmaker excels on maps where she can maintain line of sight of the enemy while positioned out of their effective range. Her Grappling Hook allows Widowmaker to position herself on a high vantage point to make her presence felt throughout the battlefield, forcing the enemy to cower in fear.

On the other hand, Widowmaker is only influential in a few areas on some maps and can be completely negligible on others. Her 200 HP and lack of sustainability requires Widowmaker to position herself in a position where she can take advantage of her sniper rifle’s range, and where the enemy has to combat her with a damage fall off penalty. If she positions too far from the fight, she may not have line of sight on the battle, and force her team to fight outnumbered. If she positions herself too close to the fight, enemy heroes with high mobility may contest her position in a more favorable engagement and she is not adequately equipped for close quarters combat on her own.

Maximizing Widowmaker’s potential requires the knowledge and understanding of her limitations within specific compositions and map environmental landscapes. She is only beneficial in some areas of some maps and her presence may force her teammates to fight around objectives where a 6th hero’s physical body can prove more beneficial to fend off enemy Heroes.

ABILITIES

Damage 13

Rate: 10/s

Ammo: 30

Reload: 1.5s

Widowmaker’s rifle without being scoped in, is a fully-automatic assault rifle. While the weapon does not suffer any Damage Fall off Penalty and is a hitscan weapon, the weapon’s accuracy penalty starts after the first shot. Other hitscan heroes fully automatic rifles do not suffer any accuracy penalty until after the 3rd shot allowing their initial burst damage more effective in a medium range. The accuracy penalty makes her rifle’s assault mode ineffective at long range, a last resort kind of weapon when the enemy is engaging her up close. The weapon shares the same ammo pool with the sniper mode.

Damage 12-120

Rate: 0.8-2/s per shot

Scoping: 0.33/s

Ammo: 30

Ammo Usage: 3 per shot

Reload: 1.5s

Scoping in and out of her rifle will require a 0.33 second animation time. While scoped in, Widowmaker can no longer jump without scoping out and losing the charge she has built while scoped in. However, she can still scope in while she is falling. While scoped in, Widowmaker’s rifle automatically charges to increase her damage at the expense of two additional ammo consumed when discharged. Even without charging, each shot scoped in will consume three bullets. While scoped, the weapon loses its automatic capabilities and can only fire twice every second. However, allowed a 0.75 second charging time, the damage will increase by 1000%. Similar to Ana, when scoped in Widowmaker loses a portion of her field of vision and movement speed. With a headshot modifier of 2.5x, Widowmaker has high potential burst damage output.

Damage 15/s (75 total)

Area of Effect: 3m

Speed: 19m/s

Cooldown: 15s

Widowmaker shoots a mine which explodes once an enemy has come in contact with its area of effect. The Venom Mine can be attached to any immobile surface which includes ceilings and walls. The Venom Mine will release a poisonous gas which deals damage over 5 seconds. Venom Mine can damage multiple enemies should they enter the area of effect within the 5 second duration. Anyone who is affected by the mine will grant Widowmaker infrasight for a short duration on the poisoned enemy player. If Widowmaker is scoped in, the overlay will notify the direction and area the Venom Mine was deployed, and if destroyed or triggered it will notify Widowmaker.

Range 20m

Speed: 16m/s

Cooldown: 8s

Widowmaker launches her Grappling Hook. If it comes in contact with a scalable surface within the 20 meters effective zone, it will pull Widowmaker to that location. During the animation Widowmaker can cancel the action with the jump button and if canceled near the end of the animation, it can launch Widowmaker into the air. This ability allows Widowmaker to reach vertical locations that enemies without any sort of vertical abilities would not be able to reach.

Area of Effect: Entire map

Casting: 0.5s

Duration: 15.5s

Widowmaker activates his recon visor which will allow her and her team to see the heat signatures of all enemies on the map for 15.5 seconds. While Infra-Sight is activated, the entire team will be able to see the location of all enemies even behind walls. This ability will allow Widowmaker and her team to anticipate the enemy’s actions.

PLAY STYLES, & COMPOSITION

Widowmaker’s elimination potential is only effective in areas where she can maintain a ranged line favored by a wide yet open landscape. Some areas in some maps will allow her to be immensely effective while some maps where enemies defend against damage in a more narrow sight line can easily nullify Widowmaker’s effectiveness.

For Widowmaker to be an optimal pick for her team, successfully landing headshots with her sniper rifle at full charge is mandatory to benefit her team’s fighting chances. Her headshot modifier increases her damage by 150%, as a successfully placed headshot will deliver 300 damage. Her Widow’s Kiss in sniper rifle form deals 120 damage with a single blow to the body. This damage can be used as an offensive pressuring tool or contribution towards a swift elimination of an enemy her allies decide to focus down. The 120 damage body shot will not eliminate any hero at full health and unless enemy heroes are poorly positioned they can hastily break lines of sight, removing her threat. Without allowing her sniper rifle to charge, Widowmaker will only deal 12 damage per round which is 1 damage point less than her Assault mode version of Widow’s Kiss.

Widowmaker is most effective when staying hidden. Players with patience and exceptional game awareness can learn to wait for allies to engage into a team fight before joining the battle. This will provide an element of surprise as she may be able to catch some enemy Heroes out of position, providing her with optimal lines of sight where she is able to rain down effective damage and ultimately eliminations.

Widowmaker can excel in various types compositions. Most of her success is dependent on a map’s terrain and layout, coupled with her team’s successful and well positioned engagements. A team who is able to successfully keep the enemy team occupied, and in the line of sight of their Widowmaker, gives her the chance to apply her lethal long range damage.

Quick Composition Terminology:
321 Tank = 3 Tanks, 2 Supports, 1 Damage Dealer
222 Standard = 2 Tanks, 2 Support, 2 Damage Dealers

In a 321 tank oriented composition, a team’s play style is gaining forward ground at a more gradual pace towards the enemy team (usually with Reinhardt, Zarya, Roadhog or D.va). Widowmaker can attempt to apply damage onto her enemies before her allied team engages into an all out team fight. With successful headshot eliminating lower HP targets or bodyshots significantly lowering the health of enemy Heroes, Widowmaker can give her team a numbers advantage once both teams fully commit to a teamfight.

Compositions such as 222 standard that involve Dive Heroes is a more ideal playstyle. The fast-paced engagements can provide a more chaotic and scattered enemy team. This takes battles to open areas where Widowmaker has a clear line of sight to successfully hit her targets. Players and teams must keep in mind that a Widowmaker hero selection within a traditional dive composition will have be a trade off of one less diving damage-dealing hero. In some cases, teams can adjust their composition pick by deciding to only have 1 tank while maintaining two damage-dealing dive Heroes.

In certain situations where Widowmaker is unable to capitalize on assassinating enemy targets or where she fails to deal large amounts of damage with successful follow up, a swap to a different Hero may be warranted. Players must identify Widowmaker’s ineffectiveness in the early stages of the round before too much time is taken off of the game time clock.

WIDOWMAKER QUICK TIPS

Players insisting on playing Widowmaker without being able to land her sniper shots on multiple targets consistently must keep in mind that their team will be at a numbers disadvantage during close quarters combat.

Venom Mine allows Widowmaker to control areas of the map she would take up her sniping position, where enemies may quietly sneak up for a surprising ambush. Her mine can be utilized as a tripwire and a notification of potential threats.

Effective Widowmakers will outsmart their enemies by readjusting her sniping position in between each fight. This will allow her the ability to launch a surprise attack upon the enemy team with devastating sniper shots.

Compositions that can cause chaotic team engagements, such as 222 Dive, can force enemy Heroes into undesired map locations, providing Widowmaker successful lines of sight to fire at her foes.

PROS & CONS

Pros

  • 1. Has a lethal mental presence zoning off areas of map, not allowing enemies to hold specific vantage points
  • 2. Can position in strong vertically inclined positions requiring the enemy team to use cooldown resources to contest her location
  • 3. Very strong versus play styles catering around static ground setups
  • 4. Infra-Sight ultimate provides the entire team the best reconnaissance in the game

Cons

  • 1. Widowmaker is fragile and does not have the means to self sustain close quarters combat
  • 2. Timed engagements surprising her enemies requires patience and practice, as exposing her location too early allows team to adjust to her position
  • 3. Requires a high degree mechanical skill in order to justify her as a hero selection
  • 4. Effective damage can be easily nullified by barriers and shields placed in front of her sight lines during linear and narrow map sections
