OVERVIEW

Zenyatta is an incredibly powerful support, and if utilized correctly can be one of the more lethal heroes on the battlefield. His very unforgiving slow moving character design makes him tricky to pull off since players are required to be conscious about their positioning. What really makes Zenyatta stand out from his Support counterparts are his offensive capabilities and his ability to babysit a single ally, providing them with constant healing from his Harmony Orbs. He owns one of the two defensive Support ultimates in the game, which can instantaneously turn the tide of any team fight. He can negate team wiping ultimates activated by the enemy team, or provide influential amounts of healing, allowing his team to advance without fear. “What Dragonblade Genji?”

Zenyatta’s Orb Volley allows Zenyatta to charge his orbs with power before unleashing them in a straight line. Fully charged, it can do up to 230 damage per volley (46 per individual orb). Just like his primary fire, this weapon does not suffer any accuracy penalties. Zenyatta is able to hold 5 orbs fully charged for one second before they are forced to be released. Using melee will end the charge animation, a trick players use to not reveal their position when there are no targets. Any orb charged will consume an ammo from his pool even if they are not released.

Any enemy with the Orb of Discord suffers an additional 30% incoming damage. Zenyatta can see on his screen where the Orb is Discord is even if the enemy is not within his line of sight.

Zenyatta places an orb on an ally. This orb will persist on the teammate until they lose line of sight of Zenyatta for 3 seconds or is eliminated. This orb will continuously heal the target. While they are beneficial to agile flankers that may be trickier to heal, the orb is bright yellow and is above their heads which may reveal their location to the enemy team.

PLAY STYLES, & COMPOSITION

Zenyatta is almost always played from a defensive position due to his lack of mobility and escape. Playing him aggressively while overextending can lead to a quick demise, placing his team at a severe disadvantage. Always remember that as a player, being alive is more impactful; doing less damage output is better than being dead and providing nothing. This applies to Zenyatta since his lower healing output from Harmony Orb is a tradeoff for an offensive debuff. Zenyatta’s kit is well suited for players looking to lead their team with focus firing shot calls. Learning detailed map knowledge as advantageous positioning strongly favors his static kit. This type of positional awareness should provide him with extended periods of time out of harm’s way.

Zenyatta really flourishes when he is used effectively with Dive compositions which can take tremendous benefit from his Discord Orb’s 30% increased damage taken debuff. The debuff allows a much quicker chance of eliminating a focus fire target. High burst damage allies, such as Genji’s Swiftstrike combo and Tracer’s Pulse Pistols can eliminate an enemy’s health pool in the blink of an eye.

Players picking up Zenyatta need to familiarize strengths and weaknesses with specific support heroes. Lucio is a crucial support in most dive compositions and a common partner for Zenyatta. The duo will need to communicate when the most optimal time is for Lucio to leave Zenyatta’s side to assist teammates. This removes movement speed and defensive protection from flankers.

When played with compositions which are more static in playstyle, Zenyatta can maintain a strong defensive position with strategic high ground or hidden areas. The sudden increase of damage Zenyatta can provide can disrupt any enemy pressure or elimination potential.

A common high ground defensive trio has Zenyatta matched alongside Ana and Soldier: 76. The combined usage of 76’s Biotic Field and Ana’s Biotic Grenade provides the trio with 385HP over the course of 5 seconds. Zenyatta’s Discord Orb and 76’s Helix rockets provides burst damage. Poorly coordinated enemies can be pressured to leave the engagement due to the strong damage output.

ZENYATTA QUICK TIPS

Remember to apply the Harmony and Discord Orbs before activating your ultimate.

Staying close to other support heroes and protective tanks which play in the middle of a team formation will provide Zenyatta a much better chance of survivability.

Players who want to see the full effectiveness of Zenyatta’s kit will learn how to call out focus fire Discorded targets for the entire team.

Keeping track of the opponent’s damage dealing ultimates is very important.

PROS & CONS

Pros

  • 1. Discord Orb is one of the more powerful debuffs in the game, providing 30% more damage taken on foes
  • 2. Transcendence can counter offensive ultimates that cannot instantly out damage the 300 HP per second healing
  • 3. Can easily apply healing on allies with a persistent Harmony Orb, reaching far distances
  • 4. His high DPS coupled with his Discord Orb makes him very potent against flankers if used properly

Cons

  • 1. Severe lack of mobility which punishes over-extensions or poor positioning
  • 2. Larger than usual Support hitbox makes him a bit more vulnerable
  • 3. Transcendence effects being applied to allies can be countered by Ana’s Biotic Grenade
  • 4. His health pool is padded with 75% shielding (blue health bars), making him easily disposable for Sombra compositions
